One of the most important symbols of Jamaican music and culture visits Ostróda during the exceptional tour to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the band. There is no more important in the world for ska than The Skatalites.
The Skatalites merged jazz, calypso, mento and r’n’b into a brand new style - ska, which later became the foundation for reggae.
The group was founded in May 1964, but their existence lasted only 15 months. However, despite such a short time there were extremely influential and changed the face of Jamaican music forever. They dominated the Jamaican music scene and performed with almost every major singer including Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff or Toots and the Maytals.
Many future members of the band as a saxophonist Tommy McCook, trombonist Don Drummond, Johnny 'Dizzy' Moore, Lester Sterling were musically educated by Sisters of Mercy at the legendary Alpha Boys School.
The Skatalites played as a permanent house band for the famous Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One, a place for all the founding fathers of reggae.
After the group officially disbanded in 1965, all of them went their own ways and continued individual musical projects. Official reunion took place at the Sunsplash Festival in Montego Bay, Jamaica in 1983.
Since then The Skatalites have been working hard as always. In 1992 they went for the first European tour and by now they already presented their music in every corner of the globe. In 1995 and 1996 The Skatalites were nominated for a Grammy for "best reggae album". You can see about 30 albums and countless compilations and singles on their account. The latest album is "Walk with Me", released in 2013 and recorded with the late drummer Lloyd Knibbs. The album is a tribute to those band’s members who passed away.
The Skatalites is now not just a band, but an institution that promotes the roots of Jamaican culture. During a show in Ostróda you will see two original members: Lester Sterling on alto saxophone and an amazing female vocalist Doreen Shaffer, as usual backed by the best musicians of the genre.
Surerly you will hear the immortal classics like "Guns of Navarone", "Freedom Sounds" and "Rivers of Babylon" and the more recent songs.
Jamaican music never gets old !
